About The Champions Awards

The Volunteering and Community Champions Awards is a gala-style awards event hosted to celebrate students and staff at the University of Winchester who take part in volunteering and community activities.  It brings together volunteers and community partners.  For 2022 there's also a new award category 'Community Partner Champion'.

This annual event is a wonderful showcase of the dedication, commitment and enthusiasm for volunteering and community service by those involved.  Nominations are held in February as part of the national Student Volunteering Week , ahead of the presentation event which takes place at the university in March.  'Champions' are nominated across a range of categories.

 

First launched in the academic year 2018-2019, and led by an inspirational student, Sam Jenkins BA (Hons) History, it has since become a valued part of the volunteering and community events calendar. 

In 2018-19, the Champions Awards was organised in collaboration with Winchester Student Union, University Careers & Volunteering Department and Winchester Hub.  With support from the University's Centre for Student Engagement and Widening Participation Department.  £2000 in funding was provided by the Student Academic Council to enable the event to take place.

 

In 2019-20, the second event was run successfully once again with thanks to funding from the University, Hampshire County Council and Winchester Rotary.

 

And in 2020-2021 due to COVID restrictions, the event was successfully delivered online!

The Volunteering and Community Champions Awards Team brings together dedicated students, staff and community partners from across Winchester to plan, promote and deliver the event.

 

In addition to celebrating volunteers and raising awareness of their valued contribution in the wider community, the Champions Awards also aims to encourage others to engage and get involved with volunteering and community action in Winchester and local areas.
